CHAPTER 161
MEDICAL REGISTRATION
1. The Medical Registration Ordinance is amended-
(1) in section 2-
(a)in the definition of 'Chairman' by adding before the
semicolon-
and includes any person elected to act as Chairman
under section 3A(4)
(b)in the definition of 'Director' by repealing 'Medical and
Health Services' and substituting 'Health';
(2) in section 3-
(a) in subsection (2)--
(i) in paragraph (f), by repealing the full stop and
substituting a semicolon;
(ii) by adding after paragraph (f)
(g) a lay member to be appointed by the Governor.
(Added 3 of 1988 s. 3)
(b)in subsection (3), by repealing 'or (f)' and substituting
', (f) or (g)';
(3) by repealing section 3A and substituting---
3A. (1) The Chairman of the Council shall-
(a) be elected by the members from amongst themselves;
(b)subject to subsection (5), hold office for 3 years or
until he ceases to hold office as a member, whichever
is the earlier; and
(c) be eligible for re-election.
(2) If the office of Chairman becomes vacant due to
effluxion of time, or as a result of resignation or otherwise, the
Secretary shall convene a meeting of the Council within 3
months of the occurrence of such vacancy for the purpose of
electing a Chairman.
(3) The Secretary shall preside at a meeting held under
subsection (2) until the Chairman is elected and assumes office,
but he shall not have an original or a casting vote.
(4) If the Chairman is unable to perform the functions of
his office for any period due to absence from Hong Kong or
any other reason, the members of the Council shall at a meeting
of the Council elect one of themselves to act in his place for the
duration of that period and notwithstanding any provision in
this Ordinance, the Secretary may, where necessary, convene a
meeting for the purpose of such election.
(5) The Chairman may at any time resign his office by
giving notice in writing to the Secretary.

(4)in section 4(1) by repealing 'Director' and substituting
'Chairman';
(5) by adding after section 20C(2)(c)--
(ca) 2 registered medical practitioners appointed by
the Council after consultation with the Chinese
University of Hong Kong; (Added57of 1989s.2)
2. The Medical Practitioners (Registration and Disciplinary
Procedure) Regulations are amended-
(1) in regulation 6(1A) by repealing '2 inches by 2 3/4 inches' and '1 1/2
inches by 2 1/4 inches' and substituting respectively '50 x 70 mm'
and '40 x 60 mm';
(2)in regulations 9(1)(b) and (c), (4)(a) and (6) and 22(a) by
repealing 'Director' wherever it occurs and substituting
'Chairman'.
(3) by repealing the Second Schedule and substituting-
SECOND SCHEDULE [regs. 4 & 8]

14 in theregister for medical practitioners resident
in Hong Kong, who is in the full-time service of an
approved subvented hospital and is not engaged in

(d) for a medical practitioner deemed to be a regis-
tered practitioner under section 29(d), including
any such medical practitioner who is registered or
entitled to be registered under section 14 75
